Meltric Plugs
Meltric Decontactors are a combination of a plug/receptacle and a disconnect switch in the same device. These devices, are horsepower rated and switch rated to UL Standards 1682, 98 and 508, compact, watertight, and perform as true functioning disconnect switches for motors and other inductive loads, without the need for an electrical or mechanical interlock. As a switch, the decontactors function as "in-line of sight" disconnect switches. When used with a cord, they function as an "in-line" switch. Decontactors can make or withstand a 10,000A short circuit, with a power factor as low as 0.45.
Meltric products were designed in 1952 to improve upon the problems posed by standard pin and sleeve
technology. With the growing needs of electricity in industry came the need for larger and more
diversified connectors. The size of pins and sleeves were increased to allow for the transmission
of more electrical energy. This was a low cost, limited performance technology, however, these products
were not capable of functioning as a switch. By utilizing silver-nickel contact technology similar
to that found in a motor starter, Meltric products developed as a combination plug/receptacle, and
switch. This technology uses pressure contacts, currently used by all industrial power "breaking"
systems (i.e. motor starters, relays, and contactors). Keep in mind that any time you make or break
a plug under load, you are using the product as a switch. Meltric devices are designed and tested as
switches to ensure safety and reliable performance over time. As a result, these devices provide superior
conductivity and resistance to arcing than traditional brass pin and sleeve contacts.
Meltric products offer several other advantages over traditional twist type or pin and sleeve devices in
safety, size, performance - and above all cost. The following outlines some of these advantages:
- Meltric devices are listed to UL 98/508/1682 Standards and thus have higher performance listings than pin and sleeve devices.
- Meltric devices are the only products that have been listed as a switch without the need for an additional mechanical interlock switching device. With Meltric, you are getting more than you bargained for because not only do you get the plug and receptacle; you get the switch thrown in for free!
- We are so confident in the electrical performance of our products that we back our contacts with a 5 Year limited warrant.
- Due to the modular design of our products, 95% of incoming orders are shipped within 24 hours.
Meltric also designed its product lines with many attractive features. Many of our products utilize "dead front" construction which protects the operator or the public from any live contacts. Many of our products are designed for harsh environmental areas. We use stainless steel springs and screws, combined with polyester casings for durability and safety. Since Meltric contacts are made with silver, they do not corrode in washdown areas where caustic solutions are used. All of our products are also voltage polarized to assure safety.
Meltric is part of an organization of companies who have been manufacturing and selling the highest quality and safest heavy duty plugs and receptacles for over 45 years, with more than two million units in use, not one electrical injury has occurred worldwide. Products are available throughout the United States as well as Canada.
When needing products in other countries, just use the Maréchal® trademark and receive quick parts and services on all Meltric products (see list of International Distributors below). If you need your equipment sent overseas, no matter what the location, you will always find someone ready to serve you and your customers.
Maréchal® Electric developed the concept of combining the advantages of silver-nickel butt contacts and the load making and breaking capacity of a switch, to that of a plug and receptacle.
The range of products now produced by Maréchal® Electric, the subsidiaries (including Meltric), and appointed manufacturing licensees throughout the world, require very complex tooling. Therefore, very strict dimensional and quality control practices are applied and followed. No matter what part of the world Maréchal® equipment is made, all identical components and finished products are totally interchangeable.
